Let’s start off by talking facts. Google earns 99% of its income from online advertising programs as noted in Wikipedia. Google’s dominance in search advertising has given them revenues of 16.6 billion in 2007 alone. Thats a big number and certainly makes a lot of us jealous.
Lets not forget that Google’s Adwords Program put a lot of people out of business within 24 hours of starting up a campaign. Back then Google did very little to help people understand how to use Adwords correctly. There was very little explanation on whether to use a budget or just let the campaign run itself. Stories of people letting the campaign run itself then coming back 24 hours later to look at it and see thousands of clicks took place costing them well… thousands.
So for all the “Google Haters” out there, most likely you can’t put them out of business. However, you can certainly make them bleed! Listen carefully now, this is where it gets interesting. Lets just assume 1 in 10 people hate Google, that’s 10%. Doesn’t sound like a big number right? Lets do some calculations and cut 10 percent away from Google’s 2007 revenues. That comes out to using Google’s infamous searching calculator:
How can it be done? Simple, stop clicking on sponsored links and ad images you see everyday when you surf the web. Every time someone clicks on a link out there, someones making money! Often times, these ads and images are already integrated into the website and people click on it without realizing it.
Try this instead, if you see a sponsored ad or link about a specific kind of TV put your mouse over the link and look down below at your status bar to see where it will take you. If you can’t see anything, you can turn on your status bar under the ‘View Tab’ in your browser. From there just go to your address bar above and put the website in. Yes, it is one extra step to take… but it certainly takes away from Google’s revenues!
So if right now 1 in 10 people who surf the web stopped this for one year it would certainly rub some salt into the wound. Chances are with the rising number of “Google Haters” out there it’s more than 10 percent.
Am I a “Google Hater”? No, in fact I love Google they have done a terrific job integrating the Internet all into one platform. Do I think they have gotten too powerful? Yes, just look at this article from CNN.
